EDIT: just noticed that even though I thought I was in the "australia" section of yahoo q&a, it still displays questions from US askers.. My little example probably won’t apply then, because it is about an australian provider. But still, the general gist is the same…

Unless you need to be able to access the web from anywhere at any thime, I’d say wifi… As previous answerers said, wifi will only allow you to access the web from hotspots, (most gloria jean’s cafes or starbucks have one for example, and they are all over the place in city centres), but wifi will be faster and cheaper than the phone company options.

For example, let’s take a look at that $29.95 per month deal with 3…They advertise it as if it’s all great (and "only" 30 bucks), but it actually only allows for 1 Gigabyte of downloads (who knows, maybe they count uploads in that too, just like bigpond) which isn’t much at all, especially not for that price. And once you go over that limit they’ll charge you extra for every megabyte you download. (You probably know this but I thought I’d add it just in case: every time you open a website it counts toward your download limit, because everything that is displayed needs to be downloaded to your pc first. A website with more pictures or videos will take up more than one with only text..Naturally browsing through many pictures on the web will amount to a fair bit of download usage.)

It depends on what you use it for though, if you only want to send email and browse the web (lightly), 1 GB per month may just get you through. But forget about download intensive browsing, like watching videos on youtube, listening to internet radio or downloading large files. That would bust your download limit in no-time and leave you stuck with huge bills due to hidden charges..

(if you update your question and add details about what you’d use the web for with your laptop, then I could help you more)

A cell network card works in more places.

Wifi is generally cheaper and can be faster.

"Better" depends on your particular circumstances.

It depends where you want to use the laptop at. Wifi will require local hotspots (perhaps your own — a wireless router) to use.

The phone company’s solution should work almost anywhere a cell phone would, but will be limited more in speed, and be more expensive than if you had been able to go with a local hotspot of some sort.
