Wireless broadband laptop card without plan subscription?

I would like to purchase a wireless broadband USB laptop card from one of the carriers like AT&T or Verizon Wireless but I don’t want to subscribe to a 2-yr plan.
Is it possible to get one of this devices without subscribing a plan and paying only for the Megabytes used or the time connected?

That is a great question and I hope that someone gives you a better answer, as I’d love to do that too!
This is the best I can do:
Tmobile offers a pay as you go plan for its hotspots—check out this site: https://selfcare.hotspot.t-mobile.com/accountcreate/SetPromotionCode.do
So you can pay for an hour or a day etc. if you go to a Tmobile Hostspot. Also check out this site for a listing of free and paid wifi spots around the country. http://www.jiwire.com/search-hotspot-locations.htm
The Tmobile Sidekick also offers prepaid unlimited cell phone Internet for $1 a day–sometimes that’s all you need and there are no contracts nor commitments.
A few cities and college campuses offer wireless services as well–you might want to check it out to see if anything is available in your area.
Hopefully those expensive, 2 year contract, limited Gb Internet plans will be a thing of the past very soon, but I haven’t heard anything yet.
